The fixture swap process
We kill the circuit at the breaker, not just the switch, and confirm it's dead with a non-contact tester before anyone touches a wire. The old fixture comes down, the box and its wiring get inspected for the shape and rating we need for the next step, and the new fixture goes up on its own mounting hardware rather than whatever bracket happened to be in the box already.
Wire nuts get replaced, not reused, and every connection gets a tug test before the canopy goes back over it. The whole thing runs thirty to ninety minutes per fixture depending on ceiling height and whether the existing box needs any work first.
Box weight ratings
A standard ceiling box is rated for light fixtures up to about fifty pounds, which covers the overwhelming majority of pendants and flush-mounts. Anything heavier, and some large multi-tier chandeliers get there fast, needs a box rated for that specific weight or a brace bar that spans two joists. We weigh or estimate the fixture before install and say plainly if the existing box can't take it, rather than hanging it and hoping the drywall holds.

Recessed retrofit cans
Retrofit cans install from below without opening the ceiling from above, clipping into a hole cut to the can's own template and gripping the drywall from spring-loaded ears. They suit a room that already has a ceiling in place and just needs the light redistributed, which is most kitchens built before recessed lighting was standard.
Spacing follows the room, not a fixed rule: a ten-foot kitchen usually runs four to six cans depending on cabinet layout and where the sink and island sit, and we mark the layout on the ceiling in pencil before cutting so you can see it and change it before it's permanent.
Dimmer and LED driver compatibility
Old dimmers were built for incandescent bulbs pulling steady current. Most LED bulbs and drivers pull current in short pulses, and a dimmer that wasn't designed for that load will buzz, flicker at low brightness, or fail to dim below about twenty percent. The fix is matching the dimmer's rated minimum load and dimming curve to the specific driver on the fixture, not just buying whichever dimmer is cheapest at the hardware store.
Smart dimmers add a second compatibility question on top of the electrical one: whether the dimmer's own firmware recognizes the driver's dimming curve at all. Some pairings that work fine on a standard dimmer will hum or step in visible jumps on a smart one. We test the pairing on site before we call the install finished, and if a specific driver won't play well with a smart dimmer, we say so and offer the standard version instead of leaving you with a fixture that hums every evening.
